How Big Is Africa... Really?

Three of the world’s largest countries fit inside Africa — with room still left over.

Africa total 11.7M sq mi
United States (lower 48) 3.1M sq mi
China 3.7M sq mi
India 1.3M sq mi
Still uncovered ≈3.6M sq mi

United States + China + India all fit inside Africa.
About 3.6 million sq mi (9.4 million km²) is still uncovered, enough to hold France, Germany, Spain, the U.K., and Italy almost five times over. Familiar world maps can make Africa feel smaller because many common projections enlarge places farther from the equator.

The same projections that stretch area near the poles also stretch straight lines: on a Mercator-style map, the shortest flight between two cities can look like a wild detour toward the North Pole — one map, two different kinds of lie, both hiding behind lines that otherwise look perfectly ordinary.

What do you think of as “big” that you’ve never seen at true scale?

Explore how the same illusion shows up elsewhere

It is the same equal-area trick, run in the other direction, in our Africa is 14 Greenlands exhibit — same continent, same method, an even more startling number. Once a familiar map has lied about area once, it is hard to stop noticing it lying about area everywhere else.
